Scientific research on fragrance essential oils

People can recognize and remember nearly 5,000 odors. It is said that well-trained perfume tasters can distinguish tens of thousands of odors. When there is an odor stimulus, people recall that the number of things that happened before the age of 10 was more than double that when there was no odor.

The principle that people accept odor is similar to the principle of key lock in the field of enzymology in the field of biochemistry. It is very vivid to say that gas is regarded as a key, and the part of our olfactory system that receives gas is a lock. Different keys to unlock different locks.

Why is the sense of smell so powerful?

Scientists have studied the structure of the brain and found that olfactory information is input to the brain through different pathways from other senses. Most sensory information must first pass through the thalamus before entering various specialized areas of the brain. However, for smell, olfactory information actually first passes through the olfactory memory and processing area in the brain. In other words, before we realize what we smell, our brain is already dealing with the meaning and memory of the smell.

The olfactory cortex is the olfactory center of the brain. There are two other areas closely related to it, namely the limbic system and the amygdala. These two areas play an important role in the formation of memories and the emotional factors involved in the retrieval process.
The olfactory organ is both the number one sensory organ and the earliest organ formed. Its relationship with the brain is closer than we thought. Because the part of the brain that governs thinking evolves from the brain region that controls the sense of smell during evolution.

It can even be inferred that it is the sense of smell that stimulated the evolution of the earliest primitive fish, causing a small piece of olfactory tissue on its olfactory nerve tract to evolve into the brain. The information from the olfactory neurosphere is transmitted to the limbic system through nerve impulses, that is to say, the odor stimulus is very tightly connected to the memory material. The odor stimulation can increase the excitement of the limbic system, thereby improving the memory effect.
